The California Smokers' Helpline (CSH) is part of UC San Diego's Moores Cancer Center and is funded by grants from the State of California and Centers for Disease Control. CSH conducts research and provides free services to help Californians quit using tobacco products. Established in 1992, CSH was the first statewide, evidenced-based, telephone-counseling service for smoking cessation in the U.S. Since then, CSH quit services have been expanded to multiple channels, including: web, chat, text, mobile apps, and Alexa skills.
CSH's primary target audience is California smokers, vapers, and smokeless tobacco users, including special populations: pregnant women and people with children 0-5 in the home; Spanish speakers; LGBTQ+; and tribal communities. Secondary target audiences include: healthcare providers (doctors who directly refer patients to CSH); as well as health departments and community-based organizations that promote CSH services across TV, radio, digital, print, and out-of-home media.
The Marketing Communications Specialist is a member of the CSH Communications team, which develops and executes a comprehensive Marketing Communications plan to attract and enroll primary audiences into CSH services, and to identify and engage secondary audiences to refer people to CSH services. This team is responsible for the ideation, writing, design, and implementation of communications across all channels.
Under general direction of the Communications Manager, the Marketing Communications Specialist is responsible for research, development, and implementation of advertising, outreach and engagement activities targeting special populations. These activities must: (1) increase enrollment and usage of CSH services by special populations and (2) grow secondary audiences that refer special populations.
This position: Proactively and independently develops communications solutions to solve business needs. Collects audience intelligence information to map user journeys. Creates and executes marketing plans for target audiences. Uses a Customer Relationship Management system to manage contacts, track user interactions, create data reports. Writes and designs content in English and Spanish for a wide range of digital and print materials. Serves as communications subject matter expert to funders, external stakeholders, and internal teams
In 2020, CSH is launching a large-scale organizational rebrand and communications platform redesign. This position will be instrumental in supporting these efforts and must excel at research, requirements gathering from internal and external stakeholders, writing, editing, design and review of all print and digital communications to ensure successful roll-out of new brand and website.
Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.
A minimum of three (3+) or more years of relevant experience.
Demonstrated skill to speak, read, and write in English and Spanish.
Strong skill in writing and copy editing a wide range of marketing materials, including: websites, emails, social media posts, videos, press releases, feature articles, reports, correspondence, training manuals, calendar announcements and other types of written material.
High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook).Working knowledge of collaboration platforms and customer relationship management databases.Proficient ability to use design software. Proven creative ability and skill in managing and manipulating visual media from capture to finished file.
Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
